Baa Baa White Sheep

Baa baa black sheep have you any wool? Yes sir yes sir three bags full. One for the ... you know. Now children, lets sing the other version. Baa baa white sheep have you any wool (repeat as before inserting 'white' for 'black'). Good! That's exactly what Joni sings as our politically correct nursery (no I'm not joking). So this is a silly little blog to say, come on, what the?! You do get black sheep, you know! Here's why changing the song is bad:
  • The alliteration is ruined: B-B-B is great - B-B-W just doesn't work. That's the reason the colour is there in the rhyme in the first pace!
  • I think black sheep are great, why not leave their song alone? They deserve one.
  • If mentioning the colour's the issue, why substitute another colour? Why not sing Baa Baa Baa Sheep? ;-) that way you keep the alliteration!
  • If the colours the issue, are you sure you're being totally 'inclusive'? Have you seen sheep in a field of snow? They're yellow - like your teeth when you shave, gentlemen! Now, you can see this could cause some offence in some quarters...
  • If you start messin' with nursery rhymes, where are you going to stop? Surely kids shouldn't be singing happy songs about other kids dying a terrible death (ring-around-the-rosies)?
After doing this blog I found a BBC news article on the same PC madness.
